BRUSHES

Click above to watch how brushes are used.

The brushes are a common jazz implement and have become somewhat of a lost art. Most brush models are telescopic, helping to maintain the straightness of the wire bristles. The most important element to remember when playing with brushes is to use a lateral or sweeping motion. Take advantage of the elongated sound this lateral motion produces more than a vertical, short striking sound. A sharp attack can also be used when needed. Keep the thumb on top of the brushes in a French grip to maximize the range of motion. The most common techniques used are to play a swing pattern with the right hand while stirring the left in a clockwise motion. Begin with the left hand at a 9 o'clock position and switch places with the right hand on beats 2 and 4. For ballads, stir the hands in opposite directions toward the inside of the drum.
